This province includes the island of Papua's Bird's Head region and the islands around it. To the north, the province is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the western border with the province of North Maluku and Maluku provinces, the eastern part bounded by Paradise Bay, south of the Seram Sea and southeastern borders with Papua province.
West Papua province despite having made its own province, but still got special treatment as its mother province. This province also has had its own Election Commission and hold elections for the first time on April 5, 2004.
This province has tremendous potential, be it agriculture, mining, forest products and tourism. Pearls and seaweed produced in Raja Ampat whereas only traditional industries called ikat cloth produced in the East South Sorong regency. Fragrant nutmeg syrup can be obtained in Fak-Fak regency and various other potentials. Besides the natural attractions also become one of the mainstays of West Irian Jaya, such as Paradise Bay National Park is located in the Gulf Wondama district. Besides, recently, discovered a cave that is claimed as the world's deepest cave by a French expedition team speologi Lina Mountains region, Kampong Irameba, District Anggi,Manokwari. This cave is estimated to reach a depth of 2000 meters. The mountainous area of West Papua's natural wealth is still a mystery that needs to be revealed.
